A few months ago, I attempted the 75 Hard challenge. You’ve probably heard of it, the “extreme” lifestyle transformation where you do things like drink water, move your limbs twice a day, eat food that won’t kill you, and read 10 pages.
Sounds like something you'd assign a hyperactive 8-year-old, right?
“Stay hydrated, go play outside, and read a book.”
But in the adult world, it’s been rebranded as hardcore, a gruelling test of discipline, a badge of honour for the brave few.
I’ll admit: it was hard.
And that’s the thing: It shouldn’t have been hard. It’s just water. Movement. Food. Reading. This should just be an average Tuesday.
It wasn’t hard because the tasks were difficult. The tasks were basic.
It was hard because I was trying to do them while operating inside an overstimulated, hyperproductive, burnout-fuelled society.
In our world, taking care of yourself is a rebellion. Somehow, we’ve made the basics feel radical. We glorify the grind, canonise the stress and call slowing down a weakness.
My friend and I call 75 Hard “getting back to baseline,” because that’s exactly what it is. It’s not a challenge. It’s what life should feel like. It’s the stuff your body craves when it’s not being thrown into a blender of deadlines, dopamine hits, and doomscrolling.
And yet, when you tell someone you’re doing it and you’ll hear: “Woah, that’s intense.”
Intense?! Reading a book and getting 2 hours of movement a day?
If that’s what passes for extreme, we’re officially living in a capitalist fever dream.
It’s not that life was better 200 years ago, far from it. The food sucked, water was a gamble, and reading was a luxury. But movement wasn’t optional. Stillness wasn’t monetised. Nobody needed a “wellness app” to remember they were alive.
Now? We’ve got every tool imaginable to live healthier, more grounded lives, and we’ve sprinted in the opposite direction. Every time we could choose balance, we double down on the opposite. And anything that doesn’t contribute to GDP or productivity is labelled indulgent/luxury. Or worse -“self-care.”
So when a challenge like 75 Hard comes along, it’s not just a lifestyle shift.It’s a mirror.
And what it reflects is deeply uncomfortable:
That we’ve normalised a pace of life where caring for yourself feels unnatural.
We’re so busy surviving our calendars, the meetings, the errands, the texts we forgot to reply to, that even drinking water becomes a spiritual quest.
So what’s the fix?
It’s remembering what your baseline is supposed to feel like and prioritising hitting that every. single. day.
Everyone should be doing 75 Hard. Forever.
It’s bare minimum humaning.
We need to reclaim these so-called “extremes” and return them to their rightful place: our daily lives.
